How to Maintain A Water Filtration System

Regular maintenance on your water filter keeps your filter delivering fresh, clean water without a funny taste or smell. Keeping up with a regular maintenance schedule not only keeps your water clean but can help to make your system last longer.

    Changing Filters

Changing your filters on a regular basis is a must for your home water filtration system. These filters become full of contaminants and after they do so, will begin to stop working as effectively as they did once before. Keeping a check on when your filters need to be replaced can help in making your system last longer as well because with a dirty filter the system has to work harder as opposed to a clean filter.

    Regular Cleaning

Regular cleaning of your filtration system is a must and it must be done by professionals. The disconnection needed to clean and sanitize your filter can ruin the filtration system if not done correctly. The line is turned off, the system is taken out to be cleaned and sanitized, then put back together. Keeping your filtration system clean makes sure it’s running at its best!

    Exterior Cleaning

When it comes to cleaning your filtration system it’s important to do not just the inside but the outside as well. Do an exterior clean of your system to ensure that there is no dust or other dirt buildup that could inhibit the filtration system from working. You can clean this area with a microfiber cloth that is either dry or just damp and be sure to keep the area as clutter-free as possible.

    Adding a Water Softener

Water softeners work great with a water filter to create softer water to pass more easily through the membranes of a water filter. Working together these two components can extend the life of your filtration system and keep it running the way it should. Professionals are required to install these softeners because they are tricky to install where they need to be put.

    System Replacement

At times there are some situations that can’t be saved with water filtration systems. If your system has been in place for many years there is a lifespan and time may be up. Each system has a scheduled maintenance routine in its manual and after a few years will eventually need to be replaced because a water filter system will yield contaminated drinking water if not replaced.

    Reverse Osmosis Maintenance

    reverse osmosis maintenance
Reverse osmosis systems generally last anywhere from 10 to 15 years with regularly scheduled maintenance. There are a few ways to maintain your systems to ensure that it stays up to date and in working order to give you clean drinking water. Every homeowner with a reverse osmosis filter should pay close attention to the manual provided because every filtration system has different steps. The first thing is replacing the sediment filter. This first filter should be replaced every 12 months and is the part of the filter that keeps hard particles from getting into the membrane. The next step is replacing the carbon filter which must be done every 6-12 months. This filter is responsible for filtering out the smaller particles which are substances such as pesticides and chlorine. Next is replacing the reverse osmosis membrane which must be changed out every 2-3 years. Finally, the polishing filter must be replaced every 6-12 months. This filter makes sure you have the best water possible without any adverse smell or taste.

    Carbon Filter Maintenance

    carbon filter maintenance
Carbon filters are the most common water filtration systems found in homes but need regular maintenance to provide clean and fresh drinking water. The maintenance for this type of filter starts by getting a bucket with half a gallon of room-temperature tap water. Slowly add two cups of muriatic acid and stir continuously with a plastic spoon. If there is obvious debris on the filter be sure to rinse the filter to remove this debris. Once this debris is rinsed from the filter, place it in the solution to soak. The filter has to stay in this solution for 5 days to remove all contaminants and has to stay at room temperature for the duration of the soak. Once the 5 days are up, let the filter soak in clean water for 5 minutes. The final step is to rinse the filter with a hose and reinstall it so you can continue to receive the clean and fresh water your home deserves.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I perform maintenance on my water filtration system?

Each system is different and maintenance should be performed according to the guidelines in each individual manual. Generally, all filters should be changed every 3 to 6 months, and the outside of the unit wiped down and cleaned at that time as well.

What happens if I don’t change my filter?

Without changing your filter you will notice a lot of changes in more than just your water. Not changing your filter can cause hard scale build-up in your refrigerator’s water and ice machine which can be damaging to the appliance. As a matter of fact, this can happen to every water-using appliance making them have to build up to where they won’t work as efficiently as before. This affects your dishes, clothes, and even skiing and hair by having built up in the water. Most importantly, you will notice a difference in the taste and smell of your water.
